Hugh Keevins: Clement waits on Ibrox financial windfall for new Rangers signings

Philippe Clement is waiting for players to be sold at Ibrox before he can complete any more Rangers signings, Hugh Keevins has said.

Despite working with, what is understood to be a shoestring budget, the Belgian has already added Hamza Igamane, Liam Kelly, Jefte, Clinton Nsiala, Connor Barron and Oscar Cortes to the squad.

Club captain James Tavernier’s Ibrox exit could be confirmed within days, according to The 4th Official, which would provide Clement with a new source of funds for new players.

Writing for the Sunday Mail (21 July, page 57), Keevins wrote: “There is, he has freely admitted, no money to buy players. The only way to make new signings is to sell those at his disposal who have a reasonable value on the transfer market.

“Which means further reducing experience within his squad while carrying out what the Belgian has said is a ‘massive rebuilding job’. That’s quite the conundrum, is it not?”

With Borna Barisic and John Lundstram leaving as free agents early in the summer transfer window, Clement’s rebuild was well and truly underway.

The number of additions has caused a lot of excitement among the fans, but some are wary of the lack of experience coming into the club.

Many of the players that Clement inherited were from the Michael Beale era, so it is understandable to see the new manager wanting to put his own spin on the squad of players.

Once Tavernier’s exit is confirmed, Clement and Nils Koppen can do exactly that and dive back into the transfer market. Connor Goldson and Todd Cantwell have been linked with moves away too [The 4th Official].
