Everton’s unresolved capitalisation case is going to impact the club’s profit and sustainability (PSR) calculations for 2023-24.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider he’s “very surprised” the hearing hasn’t taken place yet for that case.
Everton were docked eight points last season after being charged by the Premier League for two separate spending breaches.
The independent commission that oversaw the second case postponed an argument over the capitalisation of the new stadium interest by the club after ruling it was too complex to be heard at the time.
That meant Everton would face a further hearing later this year, with the Liverpool Echo reporting on 20 November the matter is yet to be resolved.
If the decision were to go against Sean Dyche’s side, it would mean their financial breaches for 2021-22 and 2022-23 would be significantly more than originally thought, potential leading to another points deduction.
Everton case to impact last season’s PSR calculations
Borson revealed it will also have an impact on their PSR calculations for 2023-24, with Premier League clubs only permitted to lose £105million over a rolling three-year period.
He told Football Insider: “If you think about the timetable, you are going into a situation where this is going to extend beyond January and, after an appeal, this could go on for quite some time.
“The issue the Premier League have got is some of the consequences of this Everton case around interest impacts the calculation for the season just gone, 2023-24.
“They are going to have to make decisions around 2023-24 PSR in January, so you could have the situation where nobody is really sure whether Everton are okay or not in respect of 2023-24 because this case in respect of interest has not yet been resolved.
“I’m surprised it’s still going on. If you remember, this was April when this was all tabled.
“I am very surprised they have not had the hearing, but that does seem to be the case.
“It’s going to cause knock-on issues I think, unless the case is dropped. It may be that the intention is to drop that case and for everybody to move on.
“Certainly, I think Everton fans are getting to the point where they very much want that to be the case and think it’s fair for that to be the case given everything they have been through.
“But there is no sign at the moment that the Premier League have dropped the case either, so we are in limbo.”
