Barry Ferguson has suggested Rangers could raise some much-needed transfer funds with the sale of Ben Davies to Birmingham City.
The 29-year-old has been enjoying a successful loan spell with English League One outfit Birmingham City after a torrid stint at Ibrox, where he is still used as a punching bag to criticise the current player’s performances.
However, as Ferguson described in his Daily Record column [28 December], there are whispers Clement could recall the Englishman to ease the injury crisis in Glasgow, but the PLZ Soccer pundit believes the Gers should instead cash in while his stock is high.
He wrote: “I’ve seen it suggested that Clement should look to recall Ben Davies from Birmingham. He’s certainly having a decent run down there at St Andrew’s and is playing well.
“But there’s a potential for Rangers to earn some cash from that arrangement so I can’t see him being invited back.
“[Nils] Koppen and [Philippe] Clement will have to look elsewhere for reinforcements but it has to happen now because the team is just one more injury away from a defensive nightmare.”
Rangers could kick-start January transfer plans with Ben Davies sale
While Birmingham broke the League One transfer record with the £15million signing of forward Jay Stansfield from Fulham [Sky Sports, 31 August], the Blues are unlikely to sanction a head-turning fee for Davies.
The Gers spent £4m to bring the centre-back north of the border from Liverpool despite not making a single senior appearance for the Premier League side – another in a long list of transfer failings at Ibrox.
However, with Birmingham currently leading the English third division, should Chris Davies secure Championship promotion as expected, with the help of namesake Ben Davies, the Light Blues could be in line to recoup a sizeable portion of the fee spent on his acquisition.
Unfortunately, this scenario will not help the Light Blues now as Clement prepares to enter the transfer merry-go-round again in Glasgow, and despite a significant board revamp with Patrick Stewart and Malcolm Offord arriving as chief executive officer and club chairman respectively, the sell-to-buy approach will be insisted upon again.
Ibrox News understands that Rangers have placed the sale of full-back Ridvan Yilmaz as a priority for January and are asking for a fee between £4.1m and £4.9m for his services.
The Gers sit 12 points adrift of Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic heading into the New Year after the 2-1 loss against St Mirren on Boxing Day, and the only way to close the gap is with more investment into the playing staff.
In other Rangers news, Brendan Rodgers could seal Philippe Clement’s fate at the Light Blues.
