Keevins lays into Clement after what he said about Rangers at St Mirren

Philippe Clement will regret saying that Rangers didn’t see their Boxing Day defeat at St. Mirren coming, Hugh Keevins has said.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard (27 December), Keevins slammed Clement’s post-match comments at St. Mirren Park, saying the Belgian should have always anticipated a late sucker punch.

The Light Blues had been level for 32 minutes at the time of Caolan Boyd-Munce’s injury-time winner, having gone 1-0 down to a first-half penalty – yet a draw would still have left Clement under pressure.

Gordon Duncan said: “Philippe Clement says he didn’t see it coming…”

Keevins replied: “He shouldn’t have said that incidentally, I don’t think. When you’re the manager, don’t say “I didn’t see it coming” – you’re the manager, you’re supposed to see things coming.”

Philippe Clement fast running out of excuses at Rangers

Given Clement’s comments concerned the first half in particular, it’s hardly a glowing indictment on the preparation the Belgian is giving his side at Auchenhowie through the week.

Losing Leon Balogun to injury – adding further to their centre-back woes – was hardly an ideal start, but Connor Barron and Nedim Bajrami also being hooked at half-time reflected the nature of their display.

Though the Light Blues had just five days between their last Premiership match against Dundee at Ibrox – including Christmas Day – Clement surely knows by now that such a schedule is par for the course.

Regularly playing at least twice a week since the most recent international break had seen Gers finally build some positive momentum behind them heading into Boxing Day, but that now looks to be wasted.

With another difficult away trip to Motherwell coming up on Sunday before 2 January’s potentially crucial Old Firm clash with Celtic at Ibrox, Clement could face the axe if he doesn’t turn things around sharpish.

In other Rangers news, one Light Blues star could be on his way out of Ibrox after a European club registered their interest.
