Barry Ferguson believes that Dujon Sterling may have picked up an injury as Rangers drew with Olympiacos on Thursday.
Philippe Clement opted to drop James Tavernier and start Sterling, who played 53 minutes of the 1-1 draw on 7 November, before he was withdrawn for Neraysho Kasanwirjo.
While there was no mention of an injury in the aftermath of the game, Ferguson claims he heard Clement say that he has been carrying an injury for three to four weeks.
He told Go Radio’s Football Show, as quoted by Football Scotland on 8 November: “[Dujon Sterling] did really well, looks strong at it right back. A bit surprised to see him come off, but I would imagine that’s a niggly injury. I did hear the manager say that he has been carrying an injury for the last three or four weeks.”
Dujon Sterling can be the long-term James Tavernier replacement at Rangers
Rangers fans and Clement will be fervently hoping that Sterling’s injury is not too serious, given his recent performances that have solidified his claim as a first-choice right-back.
The 25-year-old’s ability to effectively fill the role previously dominated by Tavernier has been evident, showcasing not just defensive solidity but also contributing offensively.
His capacity to ability quickly and perform at a high level has made him a valuable asset.
If Sterling’s injury turns out to be minor, it would be a significant relief for Gers, as his presence on the pitch has been a marked upgrade over Tavernier in terms of defensive reliability and overall dynamism.
His potential absence could disrupt the team’s defensive structure, especially in crucial matches, potentially forcing a reliance back on Tavernier, whose recent form has been under scrutiny.
Kasanwirjo is another option at right-back but given the struggles at centre-back, Clement may opt to play him that role instead.
In other Rangers news, sources have issued an update on the club’s new CEO to take over James Bisgrove’s role.
