'I Did Some Analysis' - Stefan Borson: Newcastle face points deduction blow after new twist

Newcastle United are likely to currently be short in terms of their profit and sustainability (PSR) calculations heading into the January transfer window.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the north-east giants are unlikely to have much leeway in terms of PSR for this season.

Newcastle were believed to be close to the PSR limit last season, with top-flight clubs only permitted to make £105million of losses over a rolling three-year period.

Eddie Howe’s side were forced to sell Yankuba Minteh to Brighton for £30million and Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest for £35million before the 30 June accounting deadline to help them avoid a potential points deduction.

Top-flight sides are required to send their 2023-24 accounts to the Premier League over the next three weeks for the PSR test to be conducted.

Speaking in a press conference on 6 December, Howe admitted he “can’t guarantee” retaining all his key players in January and he is well aware Newcastle are striving to remain on the right side of the spending rules.

Newcastle unlikely to have PSR leeway ahead of January window

Borson suggested it will be easier to predict the Tyneside club’s PSR position once last season’s accounts are published.

He told Football Insider: “All of the clubs in the next three weeks have to file their accounts with the Premier League and then they will start to filter out into the public domain.

“The PSR tests will then be run for 2023-24.

“But what it will also do is allow us to have a better feel for how close they are in their current season because the way PSR works is you have a three-year rolling period.

“If we have got the data for two of the years, then we can forecast the third year, which is the current season, and then we will be able to predict with a bit more certainty who has got leeway and who hasn’t.

“I suspect Newcastle do not have very much leeway on PSR for this season.

“The reason I say that is because we know for a fact that they were right on the edges for 2023-24.

“We assume that they passed.

“I did run some analysis of their leeway from a PSR perspective on the back of those numbers, but we do need a bit more detail.

“But for 2024-25, I had them still short with very little leeway.”

In other news, Newcastle plan to accept offers for Kieran Trippier in January.
