'I do expect...' - Stevie Clifford shares Sterling admission in new Rangers verdict

Rangers defender Dujon Sterling is expected to start as the Light Blues right-back in the Premiership this season, according to Stevie Clifford.

The Englishman joined the ranks at Ibrox last summer having left Chelsea as a free agent, but was primarily played out of position both in midfield and out wide due to injuries in Philippe Clement’s squad.

But with speculation continuing to link James Tavernier with a move away from Glasgow [The Fourth Official, 15 July], Four Lads host Clifford admits that he thinks Sterling could be Clement’s first choice this term.

Speaking on The Rangers Review YouTube channel (18 July, 11:40) he said: “We need a big season from both fullbacks this season and I do expect Dujon Sterling to start as a right back this season.

“I’m only going to guess this because I can’t remember slightly but I’m sure he started Morton at home at right back and everyone was going crazy about his delivery because he got to the byline a number of times and was whizzing it over.”

Will James Tavernier exit Rangers amid Saudi transfer speculation?

Sterling was one of the surprise packages at Rangers last season. Having arrived with little fanfare before starting slowly north of the border, the Englishman finished the campaign as one of the Gers’ most reliable players.

Pundits and supporters alike were quick to praise the versatile defender for his adaptability and consistency, despite the fact he was very rarely allowed to play in his most natural position.

While he may not have the ability to replace Tavernier’s goalscoring threat at the top end of the pitch, he is much more effective out of possession than the Light Blues captain and would provide greater defensive security.

So much will depend on what happens to Tavernier in the coming weeks, especially now that the Saudi Pro League’s transfer window is open.

But should Clement lose his skipper at this stage of pre-season, it seems as though he already has a replacement waiting in the wings.

In other Rangers news, Clement is expected to look to “shift” Todd Cantwell out of Ibrox in the summer transfer window
