'I just don't get it' - Michael Stewart baffled by what has happened to Sterling at Rangers

Michael Stewart has been left baffled by what has happened to Dujon Sterling at Rangers so far this season.

The Englishman, who only signed a new contract earlier this season, hasn’t started a Premiership game since the Gers’ 3-0 defeat to Celtic and only featured for five minutes in the Gers’ 2-1 win over St Mirren last time out.

Although the 25-year-old has always struggled to hold down a consistent place at Ibrox, Premier Sports pundit Stewart cannot understand why Philippe Clement hasn’t been playing him more often this term.

Speaking on The Scottish Football Social Club (28 October) he said: “I just don’t understand what’s going on with Sterling.

“When you look at the back end of last season, he was a must-play anywhere on the park starter. One of the first names on the sheet, wherever it was, you just had to find a space for him.

“Now, with all the troubles with Rangers have got, he’s not getting a sniff anywhere. I just don’t get it.”

What has happened to Rangers star Dujon Sterling at Ibrox under Philippe Clement?

It is bizarre that a player who was basically an automatic starter last year now seemingly can’t get a sniff under Clement this term.

Sterling was one of the best players in Clement’s first campaign at Ibrox as he impressed fans and pundits alike with adaptability and willingness to play in multiple positions in his first year in Scotland.

But for whatever reason, he doesn’t even appear to be close to the starting line-up at this stage, with Neraysho Kasanwirjo getting the nod ahead of him at right-back when James Tavernier was rested against St Mirren.

Unless something has happened behind the scenes that fans haven’t been told, there doesn’t appear to be any obvious reason why Clement has stopped starting Sterling, particularly when his defence has been all over the place so far this term.

It will be interesting to see when and if the 25-year-old next gets his opportunity.

In other Rangers news, Vaclav Cerny has been told that he looks like a “little boy” when he plays in the Scottish Premiership
