Will Lankshear is one of Tottenham Hotspur’s most exciting young players.
Spurs have done a tremendous job with their academy in recent years. Their recruitment of young players has improved massively as well.
The likes of Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall stole the show during Tottenham’s pre-season, while academy stars Jamie Donley and Mikey Moore impressed everyone too.
Young Lankshear is another huge talent, and Alasdair Gold has shared an update on his future in a Q&A on Football London.
What Tottenham are telling interested clubs about Will Lankshear’s future
Tottenham had a terrific start to their pre-season, and the performances of some of their young players impressed everyone who watched them.
Lankshear was one of them.
The 19-year-old had a brilliant 2023/24 season for Spurs’ academy. He scored 25 goals in 26 appearances and caught everyone’s eye.
Postecoglou called up the young striker for pre-season, and reports emerged that Lankshear was Tottenham’s most impressive player in training.
After watching him in action in the friendlies, a number of Championship clubs expressed interest in signing Lankshear on loan.
However, Gold has revealed that Tottenham have told all the interested clubs that he is going nowhere.
He said: “First up, Will needs to recover from a hamstring injury suffered in the Trophy match on Tuesday night. I think the results of the scans on that should be available today (Thursday). Hopefully, it’s nothing bad but we’ll find out.
“I think there’s the potential for Will to get minutes in the Europa League and Carabao Cup in the next couple of months before making a decision in January about a loan move. I know Spurs have been telling clubs so far this summer that he’s not heading out.
“We’ll see if there’s any shift late in the window but it makes sense to continue his integration with the squad while playing U21s games at times after just breaking into the first team group.”
What should Tottenham do with Lankshear?
Lankshear’s chances of getting minutes have decreased after Tottenham signed Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth.
The Englishman will be Spurs’ first-choice striker now, while Richarlison will play the backup role. Skipper Heung-min Son can play there as well if required.
However, we still think Tottenham should keep hold of Lankshear in this window.
Training regularly with the first team and getting a few minutes in the Europa League and domestic cup games will do him a world of good.
If he doesn’t get many chances in the coming months, Tottenham could always change their stance and send him out on loan in the winter window.
