John Wenham suspects that Tottenham have included sell-on clauses in Yago Santiago and Nile John’s transfers away from the club.
The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose claims that the North London side could soon see “huge financial windfalls” from both deals.
Tottenham confirmed via the club’s official website (30 July) that Santiago has joined Spanish Segunda Division side Elche. John followed Santiago out the door, with Tottenham confirming (6 August) that the 21-year-old has signed for CD Feirense.
Jude Soonsup-Bell recently became the latest Under-21 player to leave Tottenham permanently, with the club confirming (22 August) that he has signed for Córdoba CF. As reported by BBC Sport (22 August), Spurs have included a 40 per cent sell-on clause in the free transfer.
And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – has suggested the deals for John and Santiago might have been structured similarly.
“I know we haven’t seen it reported, but Santiago went to the same division as Soonsup-Bell,” Wenham said.
“Therefore, I suspect that there is a lucrative sell-on clause included in his transfer too, and that is possibly the same for John as well.
“With these kinds of deals, you give players away, initially for free, but further down the line you can see huge financial windfalls.”
Tottenham include sell-on clauses in the transfers of Nile John and Yago Santiago?
It would have been smart of Daniel Levy to have included sell-on clauses in the departures of John and Santiago.
There are several exciting young players in North London at the moment. Therefore, it was always going to be tough for Santiago, John and Soonsup-Bell to work their way into the first team.
As a result, permanent transfers seemed like the best solution for everybody involved.
And while it would be tough for a club to get a large fee for an Under-21 player, by including sell-on clauses it allows the selling side to bank a healthy profit at some point down the line.
In other Tottenham news, a Pedro Porro exit claim has emerged as the club prepares a £24million-plus bid for a brad-new right-back.
