Dominic Calvert-Lewin has said he wants to etch his name in the history of Everton as transfer speculation continues into the final year of his contract.
The 27-year-old has been the subject of intense speculation from the summer onwards, with several European sides interested in acquiring his services upon the expiry of his contract at Goodison Park [TEAMtalk].
Calvert-Lewin revealed in the matchday programme notes ahead of the 1-1 draw against Fulham on Saturday [26 October], as relayed by Liverpool World [28 October], that he is ignoring the outside “noise” regarding his future with his sole focus on creating history in the final season at Goodison Park.
He said: “I want to etch my name in Everton’s history forever. It’s something that I’m dead set on achieving.
“We’re playing a small part in the club’s history now – with our last season at Goodison. I think there’s something special about the place and, for all the great number nines who have played at Goodison, and had the privilege of doing it, I’ll be the last one to carry that load. That’s very special to me.”
Dominic Calvert-Lewin contract saga takes another twist
At the moment, Everton supporters will have a hard time deciphering whether Calvert-Lewin will extend his stay at the Blues among the conflicting reports on the saga.
The Mirror [26 October] reported the England international has refuted all efforts from the club to extend the deal as he wishes to keep his options open amid the interest, whereas Sean Dyche believes the forward will remain on Merseyside well beyond the current season.
However, Calvert-Lewin has hardly shown the form worthy of an extension this season, and he has been fortunate Armando Broja arrived at Goodison Park still nursing a long-term injury, while Beto has not offered enough overall.
The landscape may turn very quickly after Beto salvaged a vital draw against Fulham with his 94th-minute equaliser.
As previously reported by Goodison News, an open dialogue exists between Calvert-Lewin and the club, but whether or not a new long-term contract comes to fruition is up for debate.
One certainty is Everton need to resolve the matter soon as it has already dragged on long enough. Dyche deserves to know if he must plan for the future without his star striker.
