Sean Dyche may be safe at Everton for now having got the Toffees up and running in recent weeks, but his long-term future remains unclear.

The Englishman’s current contract only runs until the end of the season and so far, there has been no indication from either the club or the manager himself that talks have begun to extend his stay.

With the Friedkin Group’s takeover progressing in the background, there is an expectation that the new owners will want to appoint a new manager to lead the Blues into a new era at Bramley Moore Dock [BBC Sport, 21 October].

While no decision on Dyche’s future is expected to be taken until the takeover is approved and completed at Goodison Park, the Blues may have to move quickly to secure one of their top targets now.

Will Everton sack Sean Dyche at Goodison Park?

One man who has been linked with a move to Merseyside over the past couple of years is former Chelsea and Brighton manager Graham Potter.

Reports suggest Potter is admired by members of the current administration at Goodison Park and he was also believed to be one of the candidates to replace Dyche when he was under pressure earlier on this season [TBR Football, 5 September].

On top of that, the Friedkin Group are also understood to have discussed the Englishman as a potential option to take the Blues into a new era at their new stadium next term [TEAMtalk, 27 September].

However, Everton could well have some competition on their hands now after Manchester United confirmed on Monday (28 October) that Erik ten Hag had been sacked as the Red Devils manager.

Potter’s name has been floated as a potential replacement for the Dutchman at Old Trafford [BBC Sport, 28 October] and while it isn’t clear whether or not he would be interested in the post, that could set alarm bells ringing at Goodison Park.

The Toffees won’t be able to compete with the Red Devils on a financial basis, but they could win the race for Potter’s signature if they get their offer in early.

Ultimately, United’s decision to sack Ten Hag could ultimately force Everton and the Friedkin Group to make an early Graham Potter decision on Merseyside if they’re convinced he’s the right man.
