'I was surprised': BBC pundit makes stark England claim involving Chelsea and Crystal Palace stars

England lost against Greece last week as Lee Carsley’s short audition for the full-time job appeared to come to a bit of a standstill.

Carsley went with a very attacking England XI at Wembley but an inspired Greece side saw off the Three Lions and left plenty of question marks over Carsley’s future.

Of course, the England manager is someone who can rarely win and Gareth Southgate came in for criticism for being too defensive during his own tenure.

However, it was actually in defence where Carsley sprung a bit of a surprise.

The England boss went with Levi Colwill alongside captain John Stones. And according to Clinton Morrison, the decision to go with Colwill over Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi was a strange one.

Marc Guehi should have started over Levi Colwill for England

Speaking on BBC Radio Five Live, Morrison discussed Carsley’s decision to play Levi Colwill over Marc Guehi against Greece.

And according to Morrison, Guehi should have indeed been given the shout.

“I was more surprised that he didn’t play Marc Guehi at centre-half with Stones because I thought that partnership is the strongest partnership of the two. So I was surprised when Colwill played,” Morrison said.

“I like young Colwill, I think he is good, but I was so surprised that with Guehi and Stones, the partnership they are building, he didn’t play them together.”

At the time of writing, Carsley had indeed gone back to Guehi at the back, with Colwill on the bench and Kyle Walker and Trent Alexander-Arnold coming in.

Guehi and Colwill are England’s future

Morrison does make a good point here about Guehi, given he had an excellent summer alongside Stones at the Euros.

Of course, Colwill has also had a good season so far with Chelsea and on the whole, England look well set with both Guehi and Colwill going into the future alongside Stones.

Time will tell, but right now, the duo of Stones and Guehi does look the best shout for England.

Indeed, should a new permanent manager eventually come in, then they’ll have a big decision to make on the centre-back pairing.
