Jim Duffy has told Todd Cantwell he won’t move to a bigger club than Rangers after a new transfer update out of Ibrox this summer.
The English midfielder has been surrounded by speculation in the summer transfer window and Philippe Clement has now confirmed he has asked to leave Glasgow and will be sold [Heart and Hand, 24 July].
While Clyde 1 pundit Duffy doesn’t think the 26-year-old will be a big loss for the Light Blues, he doesn’t think his displays in Glasgow will have been enough to tempt a big club to sign him ahead of the new campaign.
Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard on Thursday (25 July, 14:00) he said: “I think he’s been diplomatic saying he’s looking for a new adventure, I think he’s being diplomatic using that term.
If he can get a bigger club than Rangers I would be amazed, amazed. He’s not exactly set the hair on fire at Rangers, he’s been okay in patches, but over the course, he has been a wee bit underwhelming.
“He’s all over the place at times and I don’t think he’s a player you can bank on. I don’t think it’s a big loss for Rangers, I really don’t but they have to strengthen.”
Will Todd Cantwell exit Rangers after Philippe Clement transfer admission?
As Duffy suggested, Cantwell has done very little during his time at Rangers to get fans out of their seats, let alone tempt some of Europe’s biggest clubs into spending millions of pounds on his signature.
He is capable of moments of magic, but they have been incredibly few and far between and too often in the biggest games of the season like Old Firm clashes, the Englishman has drifted into obscurity and become almost anonymous.
While supporters will be frustrated with his attitude and decision to hand in a transfer request, it does feel as though Rangers may just be better off without Cantwell at Ibrox as he has caused plenty of trouble for very little game.
Hopefully, the Gers will be able to find a club willing to take on his wages and pay a reasonable transfer fee this summer, but it is unlikely to be a household name that comes forward.
