Ian Darke claims Daniel Levy’s potential pursuit of making Tottenham Hotspur a “halo club” could alienate supporters in North London.
It has been widely reported that Levy is seeking further investment, with MSP Sports Capital having most recently flirted with the idea of partnering with the Spurs chairman.
An idea which has caught the interest of Levy is to create a ‘multi-club’ organisation [Keith Wyness, 14 September] similarly to how Manchester City operate over the likes of Girona and New York City FC as the City Football Group.
The majority of Lilywhites fans are already against Levy and ENIC, and renowned commentator Darke, speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, said: “I think that sort of model would alienate the supporters as they can be hard to please and don’t like change.
“Their worry would be, I guess, that to operate in that way would dilute the funds available to Tottenham themselves.
“But this is the modern era, and as long as it doesn’t do that, you have to embrace change and look at what the positives of such a link-up might be.”
Tottenham fans oppose Daniel Levy amid controversial calls
For the notion that football supporters are often hesitant about change, to dispense with Levy after 23 years of his control at Tottenham – and one League Cup to show for it – is something many of a Spurs persuasion would like to finally see.
There is an entire generation – or maybe two these days – who remember precious little of their club without the 62-year-old at the helm, and the MSP Sports Capital reports have even raised some spirits.
Recent decisions have provoked the ire of many fans, including Levy’s part in the call to oppose UEFA’s maximum charge limit on Europa League tickets at £42.
Bryan King was among those to claim this controversy would never have been intended to become public from the club’s boardroom, and has angered match-goers even further.
The ‘halo club’ or ‘multi-club’ process is becoming more widespread among elite clubs, and it would be a major step for Spurs to take.
In other Tottenham news, the club could recall a promising youngster early from his EFL loan.
