Nedim Bajrami could be pushed further down the pecking order at Rangers if Nils Koppen reignites interest in signing Sunderland winger Tommy Watson.
Bajrami has been a consistent player at Rangers in terms of appearances but his output has been poor with Hamza Igamane taking his place recently.
Prior to what has been a breakthrough season for the teen, Rangers were reported to have had an interest in signing Watson (Daily Mail) and if Koppen revisits a deal, it could spell even further bad news for Bajrami who could be binned if anything materialises.
The latter only joined the Gers last summer in a reported £3.4 million deal from Sassuolo (Sky Sports).
Watson has earned plaudits with his impressive first-team performances, with Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris labelling him as a “gift” in an interview with BBC Sport (8 December).
Tommy Watson would be a shrewd signing for Rangers
Watson is certainly a name that won’t resonate with most supporters across European football as, prior to this season, his only accolades were in youth football in the North-East of England.
However, the 18-year-old has since emerged from the academy and slotted into the Black Cats’ first team and been a standout performer.
A brace scored against Stoke City (7 December) sent the Stadium of Light into raptures as he kickstarted his journey into men’s football with an ability to get people off their seats.
The prospect of his signing could be the beginning of the end for Bajrami who, despite impressing recently for the Gers, has failed to contribute with goals or assists and Watson could be seen as an upgrade on the forward.
Added to the fact Watson has years of development ahead of him, it could be an interesting scenario to keep an eye on over January.
In other Rangers news, a replacement for James Tavernier has emerged.
