Andy Halliday says Rangers fans 'fed up' of one player after what has happened

Andy Halliday feels that Rangers fans have become fed up with watching Cyriel Dessers.

The 30-year-old has been a regular in Philippe Clement’s team this year and has six goals and two assists from 14 appearances, but now finds himself on the bench.

The emergence of Hamza Igamane has certainly been an exciting development for supporters at Ibrox with the 22-year-old starting to get more game time, having scored twice in his last two games.

Speaking on the Open Goal podcast [10 December], Halliday thinks it is time for the next generation: “I think fans kind of, let’s be honest, they’re kind of fed up watching Dessers over the last few weeks or whatnot.

“I think they just wanted somebody to get a chance and let them make mistakes, let them develop because I think there has still been parts of Igamane’s game that haven’t quite been there, that are a wee bit raw but I think they’re accepting it because they’ve got an asset there, they’ve someone they can actually hope can get better.

“What I like about him as well though is he’s not scared to take people on even as a striker. He’s physical, he’s got a decent touch, he looks like he knows where the goal is. But anytime he gets it, he’s like I say, he’ll face somebody up, he’ll go and have a go.”

Despite a decent goal return for the experienced striker so far this season, it seems as though a lift in form has coincided with Igamane showing the supporters what he can do.

It’s not just the two goals in his last two games that have impressed supporters.

As Halliday says, it’s his clear ability and hunger to succeed in the first team. The striker isn’t afraid to take people on and it makes him exciting to watch, giving the supporters something to cheer about which they haven’t had much of so far this term.

With plenty of games still to come, Clement can certainly use both the experience and freshness in his squad as he tries to turn the season around in the hope that they can help one another improve.

However, it does seem as though the 22-year-old could easily become a fan favourite with the mistakes in his game acceptable at this stage because of the excitement that he is giving supporters at Ibrox.
