Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd isn’t 100 per cent convinced that Lawrence Shankland would be an upgrade on Cyriel Dessers.

During an appearance live on Sky Sports [3 August], Boyd said he wasn’t so sure that Shankland would serve as a clear level-up from existing forward Dessers, who divides opinion at Ibrox.

When asked if Shankland would be an improvement on Dessers, he replied: “I don’t know. In terms of finishing, yes. But for £3million, there are other areas of the Rangers squad where the money can be spent.

“If he comes to Rangers, there will be a lot more counter-attacking football, and I don’t think that suits him. He needs balls in and around the box.”

Kris Boyd’s strange Rangers shout

As a striker, it can be easy to go through a drought. There’s always going to be a natural goalscoring ability present but, as we know, there are so many factors that go into scoring a goal.

With someone like Lawrence Shankland, however, it’s second nature. Over each of the past two Scottish Premiership seasons, he’s scored 24 league goals for Hearts – 48 in total.

Dessers, meanwhile, only scored 16. While we understand that the figures don’t always tell the full story, the eye test doesn’t fail on this one.

Dessers waits for the right moment to strike and takes it when it comes. Shankland, though, is a grafter. He works for every single loose ball and at every available opportunity, he’s there to put in a challenge.

Most importantly, he will convert that one big chance that falls his way – an area Dessers continues to fall short all too often.

There’s a great deal of speculation over his future right now. There are always going to be people on both sides of the fence, but given the quality Rangers have in their final third compared to Hearts, it just seems inevitable that he’ll be scoring goals for fun at Ibrox.

And to suggest he would not be an upgrade on Dessers is simply wide of the mark.

In other Rangers news, the Gers have made a bid for FC Porto winger Goncalo Borges.
