Rangers may have to make a few changes to their squad in January as they look to close a five-point gap with Celtic and Rangers. Here are three players who could depart Ibrox in the winter transfer window.
The Light Blues’ start to the 2024-25 season has been far from ideal, with Celtic and Aberdeen’s 100 per cent record in the Scottish Premiership allowing them to take a five-point lead.
Closing the gap on the Bhoys and the Dons will prove difficult for the Gers and this is why Philippe Clement should start planning ahead for the January transfer window.
While a few signings may be necessary, there is a need to send a few the other way to make space for new incomings. Here are three players who could be on their way out of Ibrox in January:
James Tavernier
Having arrived from Wigan Athletic in 2015, James Tavernier has established himself as a key player for Rangers, most notably leading the side to Premiership glory in 2021.
However, at 32, the right-back is past his best and has shown signs of the same in certain games this season, making him one of the worst players in the team.
Despite the criticism, Clement has stuck by Tavernier, starting him in each of Rangers’ 13 games in all competitions this term.
However, it is time that the manager axed the Englishman and cashed in on him before it’s too late.
Ianis Hagi
Ianis Hagi made his first appearance for the Gers since 2023 in their 2-0 league win against St. Johnstone before the international break after being reintegrated into the squad following a contract standoff.
He marked the occasion by providing the assist for Vaclav Cerny’s second, but was soon sent off for a poor challenge after a VAR check.
With the Romania international facing another spell out of the team, it may be time for him to move on in search of a different challenge.
The 25-year-old’s Ibrox contract expires in 2026 (Daily Record), making January a good time to sell him.
Nicolas Raskin
Arriving from Standard Liege in January 2023, Nicolas Raskin was an exciting signing Rangers made during Michael Beale’s reign at the club.
However, things have not quite worked out for the Belgian, who has notched just one goal and three assists in 53 appearances across all competitions.
The 23-year-old fell down the pecking order under Clement in the second half of last season and has been restricted to just two league starts this term.
Rangers should, therefore, consider selling Raskin in January, with a return to Belgium possibly the best option for the defensive midfielder.
In other Rangers news, an ex-player has issued an update on his potential return to the club and has already spoken to the current first-team squad.
