Dave King may have already received his answer to whether Steven Gerrard could return to Rangers and replace Philippe Clement.
The current manager is under immense pressure at Ibrox, with the Gers already nine points behind Celtic and Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership table after 11 matches.
Fans have become frustrated with the team’s current style of play, the number of missed chances and the type of excuses from Clement, but even more raised eyebrows after King suggested a return for Gerrard [Daily Record].
Much like Clement, Gerrard is under pressure in his role in Saudi Arabia, with Al-Ettifaq placed twelfth in the Saudi Pro League and being knocked out of the King’s Cup by Al Jabalain last month.
Despite this, Al-Ettifaq have made a clear decision over the Liverpool legend’s future at the club, stating in an official social media post that two other senior figures have left by mutual agreement, but not Gerrard.
Steven Gerrard to Rangers a no-go?
Keith Jackson believes King would love to bring Gerrard back to Ibrox following his three seasons in Scotland, where he managed a 65 per cent win-rate, though the boardroom is unlikely to want the same.
Fans are desperate for Clement to be replaced at the helm, with little changing in terms of results, style of football or petty excuses for the things going wrong.
However, Gerrard does not look to be the answer as his current club seems to remain trusting of the 44-year-old to turn things around in Saudi Arabia after such a poor run of results.
While he did lift the Gers’ first Scottish Premiership title since the 2011/12 campaign, the end of his tenure at Ibrox was far from ideal and would unlikely be welcomed back with open arms.
With the executive sporting director and assistant manager leaving their posts, Gerrard may not be far behind, but Ibrox is unlikely to be his next destination either way despite the pressure on Clement.
In other Rangers news, Tam McManus was baffled by what Philippe Clement did in the 1-0 win v Hearts.
