Rangers fans have been given a reality check with the £4.5million fee they spent on signing Cyriel Dessers in 2023, according to Ross McCormack.
Speaking to the Daily Record (12 November), McCormack said that while fans’ frustrations with Dessers’ erratic form are justified, the fee spent reflects the club’s current standing on the global stage.
Dessers has scored 10 goals in 20 appearances this season after netting 22 times last term, but McCormack argued that he cannot solely be relied upon.
McCormack said: “That level of fee just shows the market Rangers are in at the minute – you’ve got players going for more than that in League One down in England.
“[Yet] Rangers fans are expecting someone like that to come in and carry them through the group stages in Europe and win the title against Celtic, who are spending £11million on a kid.
“Sometimes you’ve just got to realise where you are – not accept it, because where Rangers are at this moment in time will never be acceptable – but you’ve just got to take a step back and realise where you are.”
Rangers risk being overtaken further without new investment
Other than Celtic, every single club north of the border wishes they could spend anything close to £4.5m on a single player, but the Gers risk falling into a strange purgatory between Celtic and the rest.
That’s been reflected on the pitch so far this term, with Philippe Clement’s side sat nine points behind the Hoops and surprise packages Aberdeen at the top of the table, with Dessers in particular struggling.
Of his 10 goals this season, just four have come in the Premiership, yet despite Hamza Igamane and Danilo rarely being in starting contention, the club failed to sign an alternative to Dessers up front.
Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland was the most heavily-linked with making a move to Ibrox in the summer, but a boardroom losing more hand-over-first was in no position to fund such a transfer.
The hapless way in which the Bears have been run across the past 12 months leaves fans crying out for new investment, but unless significant funding arrives soon, Dessers remains Clement’s go-to by default.
In other Rangers news, Michael Stewart questioned the mental toughness of the squad at Ibrox after their win over Hearts.
