Adrian Bevington has responded after being questioned over his potential interest in the CEO position at Rangers and Ibrox.
The Light Blues are on the lookout for a new chief executive officer following James Bisgrove’s surprise departure early in the summer after he took up a new footballing role in the Middle East.
While the Gers are still yet to appoint Bisgrove’s successor, former English FA chief Bevington has discussed the vacant position after being quizzed on the opening by Go Radio presenter Paul Cooney.
Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (5 September, 46:30) Cooney said: “They need a CEO, you’ve got a CV second to none and they do listen.
“Could they attract you to Ibrox and would you come to Scotland?”
Bevington replied: “Well, I have got a very good job at the moment with a leading German football agency that I’ve been doing for two years.
“But look, Scottish football I’ve made no secret of the fact that I would at some point in my career always be interested in working in Scotland. I think it’s an incredibly passionate footballing country and I’ve got a great deal of respect for the game up there because of the fanbase.
“You’ve got so much to build on up there, but Rangers as a football club is such a huge football institution. It’s a global club.
“Obviously they’re not happy with the situation they’re in at the moment, the fans are definitely not happy, I’ve been following it very closely and clearly they were well beaten at the weekend by a very strong Celtic team.
“What I would say is, whoever the chief executive is going to be, it’s got to be somebody who can show real leadership, they’ve got to have a real good understanding of the game and the industry, knowledge of the transfer market.
“Yes, they’ve got to be commercially strong to increase the revenues, but ultimately, they’ve got to have football industry nous, a real common sense and the ability to work relationships.
“If you’ve got all of that you’ve got a chance but it’s still a very demanding and difficult job for whoever that person may be.”
Are Rangers close to appointing a new CEO at Ibrox after James Bisgrove’s exit?
Bevington’s response to Cooney’s questioning doesn’t appear to suggest that the former English-FA chief is in any rush to make the move to Ibrox, but he also didn’t completely rule out a potential switch.
As he suggested, there is plenty of work to be done to close the gap between the Old Firm teams in Glasgow, both off and on the pitch, but the building blocks are already in place for the new CEO to progress things.
Whether that is Bevington or somebody else, it is crucial that the new figure in charge at Ibrox understand what is required to get Rangers winning again. The Light Blues cannot afford to get this appointment wrong.
Hopefully, a new CEO will be in place on the blue side of Glasgow sooner rather than later so that they can get to work on solving the current myriad of issues that Philippe Clement’s side face.
It will be interesting to see whether or not Bevington is truly in the running for the position.
