Ibrox View: Exit-linked player now has no way back at Rangers amid Clement Saturday decision

Philippe Clement’s decision not to unequivocally state that James Tavernier is set to stay could be an indicator that he’s on his way out of the club.

The Englishman was not even in the matchday squad for Rangers v Manchester United on 20 July but that was due to an injury, according to the Belgian.

His sale could bring in as much as £4million through the door [David Edgar] for the Ibrox outfit and the Belgian knows he must plan for life without the Englishman.

Ahead of the game, Clement said that he had an injury and that he wasn’t training with the rest of the team.

Given that Dujon Sterling started at right-back in the match against Manchester United, it seems that Clement is testing him in that position.

The Englishman has featured there in the past but has not been overly consistent so as to keep Tavernier out of the side.

If Clement feels the need for another right-back, he may ask the club to sign one in August.

This move would allow Clement to assess Sterling’s performance in the role and determine if additional reinforcements are necessary.

Ideally, another right-back should be signed regardless of how the 24-year-old fares in pre-season just so as to have healthy competition.
