Ibrox View: John Bennett could complete 2025 Rangers transfer masterstroke as history repeats

Rangers and John Bennett will be aiming for a cost-effective summer transfer window as the club looks to rebuild under Philippe Clement.

While Tommy Conway’s current situation with Bristol City is a complicated one, it could offer the Gers a way of stealing a cheap deal for an in-form Championship striker in the summer of 2025.

According to Daily Record [11 June], Old Firm rivals Rangers and Celtic are keeping tabs on the 21-year-old, with his stalling contract talks meaning either could sign him and only owe the Robins as little as £300,000 as a cross-border compensation fee.

The striker is set to enter the final 12 months of his contract this summer, which would allow teams to sign him on a pre-contract agreement in the New Year and wait to sign him on for a nominal fee.

Conway is represented by Unique Sports Group, an agency the Gers have plenty of experience with, especially after signing Calvin Bassey from Leicester City in June 2020.

The Gers owed Leicester just £230,000 for Bassey, as per Sky Sports, going on to make 65 appearances in all competitions and aiding the club’s Scottish Premiership title charge in 2020/21.

After just two seasons at Ibrox, Rangers cashed in on the player, selling him to Ajax for a club-record fee of just under £23million. [Sky Sports]

He has since joined Fulham in the Premier League and a similar situation could arise with Conway, who the Gers could sign for as little as £300,000, and considering his exploits in the Championship this season, it seems like a no-brainer.

The 21-year-old notched 10 goals in 39 Championship appearances, though only 27 of them came from the start, also impressing in the FA Cup.

He had a telling say as Bristol City knocked West Ham United out of the competition, scoring to secure a 1-1 draw at the London Stadium before scoring the winner in a 1-0 replay victory.

Having also made his Scotland debut on Friday 7 June, John Bennett certainly looks to be targeting the right kind of signing and could earn the club a lot of money in seasons to come.

In other Rangers news, Philippe Clement is to make 12 new signings as a transfer update emerges at Ibrox.
