Rangers fans won’t be best pleased to hear Philippe Clement say that his current squad is “not better” than the one he had last season.
Speaking after the Gers opened the new Scottish Premiership season with a 0-0 draw against Hearts at Tynecastle, Clement discussed the strength of his squad as a transfer window overhaul continues.
With 26 days left to conduct business for both incomings and exits from Ibrox, Clement has plenty of time to increase that strength, but his comments are a still long way from positive in the eyes of fans.
In quotes reported by the Rangers Review (3 August), Clement said: “I believe the club and the squad will become better.
“Is it now at the moment? No – it’s probably not better than at the end of the (last) season, but we are working to make that better.”
Philippe Clement transfer comments will give Rangers alarm bells
So far in the summer of 2024, it’s nine in and nine out at Ibrox, with Clement’s rebuild going through different stages of both pace and success as the transfer activity continues to loudly rumble along.
Connor Barron and Vaclav Cerny made their Gers debuts at Tynecastle, with re-signings Mohamed Diomande and Oscar Cortes both starting and Liam Kelly and Jefte being named on the bench.
Clinton Nsiala, Hamza Igamane, and most recent addition Robin Propper did not feature though, and thus the questions will linger over the readiness of the former duo for the long campaign ahead.
With the vast experience of John Lundstram, Ryan Jack, Borna Barisic and Connor Goldson all leaving the club, there are significant doubts over whether Clement has enough steel and mettle at his disposal.
Further signings must – and will – come before the deadline on 30 August, but it remains to be seen if they will be of enough quality to give the Gers a chance of beating Celtic to the title this season.
In other Rangers news, Clement gave an update on Oscar Cortes after the Colombian picked up an injury at Tynecastle.
