'At this point' - Alan Myers suggests Everton & Leeds deal for Gnonto now at risk of collapse

Willy Gnonto’s belated move from Leeds United to Everton may not happen for the second year running, according to Sky Sports’ Alan Myers.

The journalist replied to a fan via X on 26 July to cast doubt on signing the Italian international who Sean Dyche has been after, having seen a move blocked last summer.

The Toffees have completed the loan-to-buy signing of Jesper Lindstrom from Napoli and there had been an expectation that Gnonto was still on the cards in addition, Myers had said on 24 July, but now he isn’t convinced.

He wrote: “I’m not sure that one happens at this point, but who knows?”

Everton have secured Napoli winger Jesper Lindstrom

TEAMtalk had reported on 22 July a distance of around £5million in negotiations with Leeds but the matter was progressing positively and the gap could soon be bridged by add-ons.

Confirming the arrival of Lindstrom, 24, is certainly a positive if he can bounce back from Napoli’s disastrous title defence last term.

And with Jack Harrison also brought back from Elland Road on loan and Iliman Ndiaye signed from Marseille it wouldn’t be a catastrophe to miss out on Gnonto.

But the 20-year-old is clearly a key target at Goodison Park after multiple offers were also made a year ago [Alan Irwin, 1 September] and would have given Sean Dyche extra options in attack.

Everton signing Willy Gnonto from Leeds United may now be in doubt.

Whether it is a matter of Leeds’ stance being difficult to crack when Everton surely have to manage their budget carefully, or an indication that there are other priorities after Lindstrom arriving remain to be seen.

But the latest update is far less positive on the Gnonto pursuit than has largely been indicated so far so it could be another frustrating outcome for the club and the player.

In other Everton news, a new verdict on the potential sacking of Dyche and Kevin Thelwell has emerged after the takeover collapse.
