Rangers will not be signing Jordan Henderson if comments made by Ajax boss Francesco Farioli are anything to go by.

The former Liverpool captain has struggled for minutes in Amsterdam, with only three Eredivisie appearances this season leading to the midfielder reportedly considering his options.

Rangers had been named the bookmakers’ favourites [Daily Record, 10 October] as the most likely destination for the English 34-year-old, but Farioli was quick to quash the speculation in an interview with journalist Gianluca di Marzio [10 October].

He said: “He is an exceptional player, with great quality and leadership. He won the Champions League as captain, so I think he can tell what it means to have a winning mentality and a hard-working attitude.

“There are many beautiful things that make a fundamental contribution to a young team like ours.”

Rangers should consider a move for Jordan Henderson

While the rumours of a move for Henderson are nothing more than bookmakers’ odds, Rangers would be foolish to pass up on the opportunity should he decide to leave the Netherlands for pastures new.

He would not help the average age of the side being in his mid-thirties. However, his wealth of Premier League and Champions League experience for Liverpool would be instrumental to an Ibrox dressing room desperate for leadership.

Not only did Henderson win everything on offer south of the border, he also led Liverpool in doing so and he would become an immediate starter for the Gers. He would also become a role model and mentor to midfield duo Connor Barron and Mohamed Diomande among others.

Even after an extensive squad rebuild over the summer, the Gers are crying out for a statement signing who can transform the side and edge them closer to bridging the gap to Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

While Henderson may not have many years at the top level left, his decision to leave Saudi Arabia and split from ex-Rangers boss Steven Gerrard shows his eagerness to continue playing at the highest level well into the twilight years of his career.

Henderson has all the tools to become an immediate success at Ibrox. Philippe Clement must do all he can to drive a wedge between Henderson and Ajax and secure a statement signing for his side.
