Rangers have seen another transfer opportunity go begging after the news that a Scottish-based striker they liked is moving elsewhere.

Sky Sports reported via their website on 15 July (2.12pm) that Motherwell’s Theo Bair had arrived in France the same morning ahead of completing a move to Auxerre.

The Canadian is set to cost over £1.4million after a breakout season at Fir Park where he scored 15 Scottish Premiership goals before heading to the Copa America this summer.

The Athletic reported on 23 June that his success last term had prompted both Rangers and Celtic to show interest in signing him but Ligue 1 looks to be his destination instead.

Rangers and Celtic lose out on Theo Bair to Auxerre

Philippe Clement has been chasing a new striker this summer with Sam Lammers surplus to requirements and the Light Blues willing to cash in on Cyriel Dessers amid extensive interest across Europe and in Saudi Arabia [Chris Jack, 3 July].

Rapid Bucharest’s Albion Rrahmani looked like he might be the man but Neil Lennon’s club have seemingly now ruled out a sale.

Hamza Igamane’s arrival has boosted the striker group slightly but the manager has already indicated he isn’t ready to start as the 21-year-old is still too inexperienced [Rangers Review, 11 July].

Clement and Nils Koppen appear to be struggling to add to the youthful group of new arrivals now as numerous exit-linked senior names remain at the club.

There was interest in former Coventry star Callum O’Hare who could have replaced Todd Cantwell as a number 10 but the free agent has now completed a medical at Sheffield United.

Rangers Sam Lammers
Rangers are struggling to sell Sam Lammers despite a strong loan at FC Utrecht.

And Bair could have been a reasonable replacement for Lammers but the market for the Dutchman is proving difficult with Eredivisie sides who were interested signing other forwards.

Doubt has been expressed by Ibrox News pundit Derek Ferguson as to whether the Motherwell man could have kept up last season’s “absolutely sensational” form after struggling previously at St. Johnstone but he was certainly more effective than Lammers in Scotland last year.

Rangers also like Lawrence Shankland at Hearts and Bojan Miovski at Aberdeen in terms of proven Scottish Premiership scoring options but are reluctant to pursue either [Scottish Daily Mail, 1 July].

And it may be that they can’t look at any such move unless a deal is wrapped up and fee secured to let 22-goal Dessers depart this summer.

In other Rangers news, the Light Blues have made an approach to sign a Champions League midfielder.
