'Alarm bells ringing' - Derek Clark reacts to Clement's transfer admission at Rangers

Philippe Clement’s admission that Rangers need to sell players before they can buy in the transfer market has set “alarm bells ringing”, according to Derek Clark.

Speaking on the Rangers Review with Joshua Barrie (15 July), Clark was surprised with Clement’s comments reported by the Daily Record (13 July) that he was not aware of the situation when appointed in October 2023.

Agreeing that such a development was quite alarming, Clark and Barrie said that better communication with fans on such matters would alleviate further worry with the new season approaching.

Clark said: “It’s fair to say that the manager’s comments on transfers have maybe sent alarm bells ringing amongst many.

“When he said that he wasn’t aware of the need to sell before they can buy when he came in October, is a tad worrying I’ve got to say – what’s going on here?”

Rangers transfer strategy laid bare in complicated summer at Ibrox

Clement’s comments regarding his knowledge of the Gers’ upcoming transfer strategy will likely have some fans fearing the worst ahead of next season, particularly after the proactive start to the window.

Having already brought five new faces through the doors, as well as confirming the returns of Oscar Cortes and Mohamed Diomande, the club must now keep up with the precedent they’ve started to set [Daily Record, 4 June].

The news that there is a need to sell before buying at Ibrox puts clouds over the futures of several big-name players, particularly given the Gers are yet to bring in a transfer fee for anyone who has departed.

The likes of Jack Butland – for whom a transfer is off-limits according to Clement – are likely to fetch the biggest fees, and selling such a player could prove to be a huge setback in the Belgian’s squad rebuild.

Clement’s goal this summer is to bring in a plethora of new players and say goodbye to just as many, but the transfer policy enacted by the club’s hierarchy may restrict his control over who stays and who goes.

In other Rangers news, one Gers player left the stadium in a protective boot after the pre-season loss to Ajax.
