Scott Galloway has confirmed that he had a 14-man consortium ready to complete the takeover of Rangers.
Speaking on the Diary of a CEO podcast, as quoted by the Daily Record on 15 July, the Clinical Professor of marketing at the New York University Stern School of Business, claims that he had it figured out and saw it as a £10million convertible note.
However, he was warned against it by a historian due to his lack of knowledge of the game and how he’d quickly be hated by the fans.
Galloway said: “I got together the wealthiest, most famous Scottish people in the US, about 14 of us, and said let’s go buy Rangers FC – because it’s a publicly traded company. I had it all figured out, a £10million convertible note.
“Then a friend of mine who is a famous Scottish historian said ‘you’d be the most hated person in the UK’. He goes ‘you know nothing about football, you’d be some American idiot over there’ and I was like yeah you’re right. He is like ‘just go to Rangers games, what are you thinking?”
Rangers should not be taken over by American interest with no knowledge of football
It’s a good thing for the club that it did not go ahead as it would have raised significant concerns due to their lack of knowledge about football and the potential backlash from the club’s passionate fanbase.
Football clubs are deeply rooted in their communities and any ownership change can have profound implications.
Fans often view their club as more than just a business with it part of their identity and heritage.
If a group with no understanding of this dynamic takes over, it could lead to decisions that alienate the fanbase and damage the club’s identity.
Moreover, the consortium’s lack of football experience could hinder the club’s sporting success.
Running a football club requires specific knowledge about player recruitment, tactics and the broader football landscape.
Without this expertise, the consortium might struggle to make the right decisions, potentially leading to poor performance on the pitch.
Ignoring these aspects could lead to a hostile environment, making it difficult for the new owners to succeed.
In other Rangers news, a transfer fee update has emerged as the Ibrox outfit are keen on signing Kenny McLean this summer.
