James Tavernier has insisted he is “fully focused” on Rangers but admits teams could come in for him before his contract expires at Ibrox.
The Light Blues captain was linked with a move away from Glasgow for the majority of the summer transfer window, particularly after the Gers’ Old Firm defeat to Celtic at Parkhead [Graeme Bailey, 6 September].
Although the 32-year-old insists he has a “great debt to pay” to the Light Blues for giving him a platform, he didn’t completely shut the door on a potential Ibrox exit before his deal expires in the summer of 2026.
Speaking to Sky Sports on Friday (27 September) he said: “There’s always going to be reports or always links.
“I’m in contract until the end of next season and Rangers have always given us that platform to play my football and the foundations to do something that a lot of people would love to do.
“I’ve always got a great debt to pay, but it’s football at the end of the day and if teams come in, teams come in. I’m fully focused on the job in hand and I know I’ve still got a lot to achieve.”
Will James Tavernier exit Rangers after Ibrox transfer rumours?
While Tavernier does seem to be focused on the remainder of the season, it doesn’t seem like a Glasgow exit is completely off of the cards for the Englishman in the near future.
So often players will refuse to be dragged into speculation around their future and while the Light Blues skipper didn’t exactly say anything groundbreaking, he didn’t shut down the talk of a potential transfer as he has done in the past.
As an experienced professional, the right-back will know that he is closing in on the end of his time at Ibrox. Although it isn’t clear when he could depart, it seems obvious he won’t receive a new contract extension beyond his current deal.
Hopefully, the final stages of his career in Glasgow can be successful.
It would be amazing for everyone involved at Ibrox if Tavernier could finally banish that tag of a serial loser by winning at least one more Premiership title.
