Rangers former defender Alan Hutton believes it’s ‘about time’ the club’s board throw their full weight behind a manager after Philippe Clement’s new four-year deal.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Hutton is happy to see the club properly back the man in the dugout and allow him to ‘build on’ the foundations at the club.
There had been rumblings of discontent at Rangers with few expecting Clement to sign a new deal after what has been a frustrating transfer window.
Football Insider revealed (July 20) that Clement was at loggerheads with the Rangers board amid severe financial constraints at the club.
Now he has penned a new contract that runs until the summer of 2028 as the Glasgow giants aim to wrestle the Scottish Premier League title away from arch-rivals Celtic.
They may not have spent that much money but it has been a busy transfer window at Rangers with seven first-team players coming in, eight having left and a further three who have been told they’re free to find new clubs.
Football Insider also revealed (August 6) that Ianis Hagi, Alex Lowry, and Adam Devine have all been informed that they can exit Ibrox before the transfer deadline on 31st August.
Philippe Clement deal brings Rangers consistency
The club have lost a lot of experience so far this transfer window with the likes of Ryan Jack, Connor Goldson, and John Lundstram all parting ways with Rangers.
Clement’s new deal will offer the club a clear structure as they go through a period of transition on the pitch whether the fans and players like it or not.
“In terms of the dressing room it’s always the same, if you’re playing week in, week out you love the manager but if you’re not playing regularly, not so much”, Hutton told Football Insider.
“But I think it’s about time now that Rangers did back a manager, he’s there now for the long-term, he can put the foundations in place to now go and build on.
“The recruitment has started really well, there are some good young lads that have come in but I think they’re more for the future. He will need to add experience as well which he is trying to get.
“Ultimately the club will need to back him, he needs to be there for a number of years so he can build on his philosophy, his style of play, and the direction he wants the club to go in.
“For the past few years now it’s been turn-over after turn-over, player after player and I just don’t think the club can go on that way.
“I was quite happy to see the long-term deal because you now know that everyone is on the same page and they’re willing to let him build.”
In other news, Ranger have opened talks over a replacement for Todd Cantwell.
