Rangers could be set to miss out on millions this summer following new developments around Sam Lammers’ future at Ibrox.
The 27-year-old is understood to be out of the picture under Philippe Clement at Ibrox and has spent the start of pre-season training with the B Team whilst the first team travelled to Holland for a training camp.
While most initially expected the Gers to register a loss on the forward following his poor debut campaign in Scotland, his impressive loan with Utrecht has given the Light Blues hope of at least breaking even.
However, that hope may well be vanishing before Rangers’ very eyes after a new update emerged around Lammers and a potential permanent move back to Utrecht in the coming weeks.
Reports from the Daily Record (18 July) suggest that the Eredivisie side was willing to match the Gers’ £2.7million asking price for the Dutch forward following his successful loan spell last season.
However, Lammers torpedoed his own transfer as he made it clear to the Eredivisie side that he would not be willing to accept wages lower than his £23,000-a-week deal in Glasgow.
Will Sam Lammers exit Rangers amid Utrecht transfer speculation?
In the lead-up to the summer transfer window, Clement insisted that he wanted to overhaul the playing squad at Ibrox this summer and while he has made a fair few changes, there hasn’t been a huge turnover.
Rangers have found themselves in a position where they need to sell players before they buy and Lammers will be one of several players they are incredibly eager to get off of the wage bill.
But while he continues to demand these huge wages that have been too big for Utrecht to match, the Gers are going to have a problem finding a club willing to pay that sort of money to a player who has flattered to deceive.
That means there is a possibility that the 27-year-old will just continue to sit on his contract at Ibrox until a suitable offer comes in and who knows when that could be.
All in all, Lammers’ decision to reject a move to Utrecht could cost Clement’s side a lot of money unless a solution can be found quickly this summer.
In other Rangers news, the Gers have been told to appoint a new CEO as David Edgar tore into the Ibrox board in a new admission
