John Bennett’s resignation as Rangers chairman gives the club more off-field issues to address with few signs of the right replacement coming.
Following the shock news that Bennett would be stepping down on 14 September, fans will be hopeful that the announcement doesn’t signal further chaos at Ibrox.
The club confirmed via an official statement on their website that Bennett’s resignation is due to health reasons, with John Gilligan set to step into the role as temporary chairman until a new appointment.
With the Light Blues still in search of both a CEO and academy director following months-long vacancies though, the Ibrox faithful won’t have much faith in a first-class replacement coming any time soon.
Rangers fans braced for more chaos amid John Bennett resignation
Although Bennett’s resignation may have taken supporters by surprise, the fanbase will certainly not be shocked if his replacement as chairman takes months to report.
James Bisgrove’s sudden exit as CEO at the end of May did provide a shock to fans, but over three months on, he is still to be replaced despite the club undergoing significant changes this summer.
Furthermore, academy director Zeb Jacobs – who departed back in April – is also yet to be succeeded in a clear showcase of the remaining board members sitting on their hands.
Bennett’s health-enforced exit from the top job could speed these appointments up – suggesting he played a role in the slow processes – but Light Blues supporters won’t be very hopeful.
Instead, the resignation of their chairman simply leaves the Gers with yet another off-field hole to fill, distracting attention away from Philippe Clement’s efforts to get things right on the pitch.
In other Rangers news, former Gers captain Barry Ferguson slammed some fans for their actions towards one player after the Old Firm.
