Everton would “love” to sign another winger before the transfer window closes but it is unlikely to be Ernest Nuamah, according to Joe Thomas.

The journalist reported via the Liverpool Echo’s transfer blog [30 August, 7:18pm] that a new signing out wide before 11pm cannot be ruled out.

Lyon’s Nuamah has been strongly linked with a move to Goodison Park, with the Toffees said to have made a breakthrough in talks [Harry Watkinson, 30 August].

However, sharing what he’s heard on that rumour, Thomas said: “I’m not sure Nuamah is likely at this late stage.

“Watch this space – things can change with a phone call and we are still several hours away from the deadline – plenty of time in theory.

“But the noises I am hearing is that something would have to change for there to be a deal along the lines of that scale.”

Everton running out of time to sign Ernest Nuamah

Everton have done plenty of trading with Lyon so far this summer, with Orel Mangala the latest to make the switch between the two clubs.

That means the Toffees are well covered in central midfield until January, but Sean Dyche is still lacking out-and-out wide options.

Links with Nuamah therefore make sense, and the 12-cap Ghana international looks as though he will be on the move on Friday (30 August).

However, there has also been talk of fellow Premier League side Fulham being ahead of Everton in this transfer battle.

That, combined with the fact the window closes in three hours, means that this deal is surely unlikely to go through now.

Anything can happen as the clock ticks closer to 11pm, so fingers crossed the club have another ace up the sleeve.
