Dujon Sterling may have to seriously consider his Rangers future with the news that James Tavernier is set to remain in Glasgow.
The 24-year-old, who plays naturally at right-back has been utilised as a make-shift option by Philippe Clement with Tavernier, retaining his position despite a summer of constant speculation linking the captain with a move away from the Ibrox.
Sterling’s prospects as a starter have been dealt a further blow with reports emerging that Tavernier is now expected to remain with the Gers and reject a potential move to Turkey [Daily Record, 12 September].
He faces an important decision in Scotland, with an uphill battle to force himself into Clement’s first team plans this season.
Dujon Sterling should consider leaving Rangers
Rangers are a club in chaos both on and off the pitch with the 3-0 defeat to Celtic at Parkhead the latest in a long list of problems at the Ibrox.
Tavernier deciding to remain with the club in their hour of need is commendable – albeit, he was a big culprit in the Old Firm loss as he hid behind his teammates in the defeat.
Should he have an impact on bringing some success to the Light Blues this season, his testimonial, set to take place at the end of the season, will be a more joyous occasion than if it was held last week.
However, Sterling is set to spend the season on the bench with his options further up the pitch to be limited following his underwhelming performance in the Champions League defeat against Dynamo Kyiv.
The Englishman featured regularly last season with 33 appearances in all competitions, and shouldn’t be blamed for dreaming of becoming the undisputed choice at right-back this term following the intense speculation surrounding Tavernier.
At 32, Tavernier will only regress at this stage of his career but is still viewed by Clement as the preferred option over Sterling. If he cannot displace a player in the twilight years of his career, then perhaps it is time to move on in January.
