Bobby Madden has taken issue with Willie Collum’s review of the controversial goal scored in the 6-0 Rangers win against Ross County.
As reported by The Scottish Sun [12 September], the SFA referee chief admitted official Ross Hardie incorrectly allowed play to continue after a foul on Connor Randall in the build-up to a Cyriel Dessers goal.
Tom Lawrence was pictured fouling the Ross County man and Collum explained that VAR couldn’t intervene due to the length of time between the foul and the goal.
Madden responded on his Instagram account [12 September] and, while he lauded the SFA for admitting fault, he believes the match officials should have intervened.
He said: “Massive step forward and SFA finally seen the light.”
“Hopefully the real big incidents are reviewed consistently. I have to say I disagree with Rangers goal v Ross County. IMO you can’t win possession when fouling and then go on to score.
“35 seconds and 11 passes later the goal is scored. Yes, the APP doesn’t necessarily have to go back to when the scoring team take possession, but when they win the ball by committing a foul I think you have to.”
Rangers in the limelight for a second controversial decision
Regardless of whether or not Hardie should have disallowed the goal for a foul, Rangers still marched on to a comprehensive victory on the day.
Despite the apparent gulf in class between the Gers and Celtic following the 3-0 Old Firm loss, Philippe Clement’s side are still leaps and bounds above the rest of the sides in the Scottish Premiership.
Had the goal been disallowed, Rangers would have still won the match, so while Madden’s point is valid, it would have had no impact on the result.
This is the second time the Light Blues have been fortunate with controversial VAR decisions after a blatant Connor Barron handball in the 0-0 draw against Hearts on the opening day was not given as a penalty.
It seems that officiating both North and South of the border is in dire need of improvement to meet the required standard, with rules regarding the use of VAR changing by the minute.
However, all the talking in the world cannot change the result and the SFA will have to work harder to avoid mistakes that could determine the results of matches.
For Clement, it’s Dundee United next in the league following the international break and a must-win match to start the challenge of chasing down Celtic.
