John Bennett is taking criticism of himself and the Rangers board “pretty hard” amid widespread fan dissatisfaction, according to Robert Grieve.

The Scottish Sun’s chief football writer said on the paper’s YouTube channel on 11 September that the Ibrox chairman is now “under huge pressure” to find a new CEO after Jim Gillespie turned it down.

The Light Blues have been left in a “sticky situation” as a result as they were reportedly banking on the St Mirren vice-chair, to further add to Bennett’s problems.

Grieve said (3m 25s): “It does put the Rangers board in a sticky situation because I think they had pretty much all their eggs in that basket.

“John Bennett, who I believe has been taking things pretty hard lately with the criticism that he’s getting and the board are getting. Whatever anybody thinks John Bennett has put a ton of money into Rangers over the last few years and he’s now the figurehead of that club.

“He’s under huge pressure now to get the right man.”

Jim Gillespie rejects Rangers role to replace James Bisgrove

The lack of a CEO months after James Bisgrove “stunned” the club by leaving for the Saudi Pro League [Scottish Sun, 30 May] is emblematic of the dysfunction at Ibrox currently.

Bennett can’t be accused of not caring about the issues at the club but when he is the man in charge while the situation deteriorates it is unsurprising he is taking flack.

Just as with captain James Tavernier it may not actually all be his fault but it comes with the territory that a leadership position has to take extra responsibility.

Gillespie’s sudden withdrawal from the race after advanced talks [Daily Mail, 10 September] will have been a blow to Bennett, but if the subsequent links to Adrian Bevington advance the development has been tipped to become a positive [David Tanner, 11 September].

If and when Bennett is able to bring in a new chief executive it should not only get a major job off his plate, but also take him out of the firing line to an extent.

But clearly he has to get the appointment right if the malaise that has engulfed the club is ever going to lift, with little cause for celebration in any area as things stand.

In other Rangers news, Ibrox sources have reacted to claims another Gers defender could make a late exit to Turkey other than the captain.
