MOTD host shares TFG takeover worry for Everton after what he's heard

Mark Chapman is worried for Everton after he heard the Friedkin Group intend to have both the Toffees and Roma at the top of their multi-club model.

The Friedkin Group have agreed a historic deal with Farhad Moshiri to acquire his controlling stake at Goodison Park, with the deal now subject to approval before it can be completed.

Everton’s prospective new owners are also in charge of Serie A giants Roma, but Match of the Day host Chapman isn’t convinced the Friedkins will be able to operate with two clubs at the top of their ownership group.

Speaking on The Sports Agents podcast (26 September, 30:30) he said: “One of the things that I’d seen is that like so many, they want to be a multi-club ownership group.

“But the thing I’d either read or heard was that at the top of that would be both Roma and Everton.

“I’m not sure you can have a multi-club structure that has two teams at the top of it. I just don’t see how that balances out.”

Will the Friedkin Group sell Roma after Everton takeover?

While multi-club ownership models are becoming more and more common in the footballing world with each passing year, there always tends to be one club that sits at the top of the owner’s pyramid.

For the City Group, it is clearly Manchester City with the likes of New York City FC and Melbourne City operating beneath Pep Guardiola’s side to help the Premier League champions continue their dominance in England.

It seems unlikely that the Friedkins will be able to run their ownership group with both Roma and Everton at the same level, as they would have to make almost the exact same decisions at each club for that to be the case.

If both teams are looking to sign the same striker, which club do the Toffees’ prospective new owners back with the cash? If both clubs want to appoint the same manager, which team gets their man?

Hopefully, the riches of the Premier League should mean that the Blues are the club that will ultimately sit at the top of the Friedkin Group’s pyramid, but the suggestion that both clubs are on a level playing field simply cannot be true.
