'I'd much rather see...' - Pundit says what he would do to replace Rangers first-teamer

James McFadden has expressed his uncertainty on Dujon Sterling being a replacement for Rangers captain James Tavernier.

The 41-year-old believes that Sterling is not the best replacement for Tavernier and has said he is “not sure” on his attacking output.

Trabzonspor and Besiktas continue to show interest in the current Gers skipper, with the Turkish transfer deadline ending on 13 September.

Even if he stays, Sky Sports pundit McFadden acknowledged Tavernier will eventually have to come out of the team but thinks Rangers should look to blood a youngster rather than go with Sterling at right-back.

Speaking to the Open Goal, McFadden said: “I know people are saying Sterling (should play) at right-back but I don’t ever see him putting a cross in, even when he plays wide.

“He makes a run and he does great, but then he cuts it back. You don’t ever see him putting deliveries into the box, which you are probably going to need.

“You are having to rely on Sterling or one of the young players. I would much rather see a young player come in.”

Can Dujon Sterling emulate James Tavernier’s Rangers success?

Tavernier’s time at Rangers has been productive from a goals point of view, with double-figure goal contributions in all but one season since his arrival in 2015.

The skipper has won Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup, and Scottish League Cup medals but there is a feeling that he should have won more and plenty have made him a scapegoat at times.

Still, he has made a lot of contributions and Sterling would have sizeable shoes to fill at right-back, and given he has played much of his time at Ibrox in midfield it remains to be seen if he is the long-term solution.

The 24-year-old has significantly fewer contributions in his career, albeit he is eight year Tavernier’s junior, only managing one goal in his time at Ibrox, which is his only time on the scoresheet in his senior career.

Though the current Light Blues captain is in charge of set pieces and penalties, Sterling will struggle to emulate his predecessor.

The Chelsea academy graduate is yet to be used in his natural right-back role this season, with manager Phillipe Clement opting to start him in midfield for two matches this campaign.

This could open the door for youngster Adam Devine or loanee Neraysho Kasanwirjo to jump into the starting XI, both of whom are yet to feature so far, though could be utilised against Dundee United.
