Mikel Merino looks like he could become Arsenal’s second signing of the summer transfer window.
Merino is said to be close to joining the Gunners, and if all goes to plan, he will become an Arsenal player.
However, as any Arsenal fan ought to know, these deals can often go awry at the last minute.
Speaking on the Ranks FC Podcast, Dean Jones has been discussing Arsenal’s transfer plans.
The journalist says he does still believe Merino will sign for Arsenal, but, if this deal does collapse, the Gunners will then go in for another midfield option.
Arsenal will go for another midfielder if Mikel Merino deal fails
Jones shared what he knows about Arsenal’s transfer plans.
“The fact that Arsenal have a defensive signing in, and they are going to get a midfield signing in. I still do believe that it will be Merino, but if it isn’t him, they will go and sign somebody else, and possibly a forward,” Jones said.
The other midfielders who have been linked to Arsenal
Arsenal may have to scour the market for other options if their move for Merino falls through.
The Gunners may well have a tough time finding the right player though.
Indeed, a lot of Arsenal’s prior midfield targets have already moved.
Joao Neves is someone Arsenal have been keen on, but he has already joined PSG.
Bruno Guimaraes is also someone Arsenal are interested in, and perhaps the Gunners could revisit this move if their deal for Merino does hit a speedbump.
Merino should ultimately be the player Arsenal end up signing, but if the Spaniard doesn’t join the Gunners, another midfield addition could be on the cards.
Arsenal could be set for a busy end to the summer transfer window.
