Jose Cifuentes has been convinced to sign for Aris Thessaloniki after Rangers agreed a loan deal with the Greek club, according to Sportime.
The Greek news outlet reported via their website on Saturday (27 July) that Cifuentes, 25, will join Aris on an initial loan with an option-to-buy clause included.
It is understood that Aris have managed to sign the Ecuador international, who still needs to officially terminate his current loan deal at Cruzeiro in Brazil, by offering him a record-breaking contract.
Sportime claims that Cifuentes has been lured to Greece due to a contract that’s worth at least £16,000-a-week. It’s described as “crazy money” by journalist Nikos Markatos and more than what ex-Aris striker Aboubakar Kamara was paid when he joined them from Fulham in 2021.
Jose Cifuentes agrees “crazy” deal to leave Rangers again
Rangers fans will be praying that Cifuentes goes for good this time.
Michael Beale did everything he could to sign the Ecuador international from LAFC last year, eyeing him up in January and then going again in the summer when he finally struck a deal.
But if there was a transfer that summed up Beale’s time at Ibrox, it was this one because all of that effort and all of that money went into signing a complete and utter dud.
Cifuentes played 20 times in all competitions for the Light Blues last season and was only trusted to start six times in the Scottish Premiership, never playing once against Celtic.
He then went out on loan to Cruzeiro in Brazil in February with many thinking that a return to South America would do the ex-CD America ace some good.
However, he’s played just 12 times in total for the Brazilians and was unused by Ecuador in the Copa America this summer.
Cifuentes has to go for good. At least Aris are showing they are willing to pay up for the midfielder but you fear that this record-breaking contract for them won’t become active because there’s no way he’ll go there and prove he’s worth it.
