Journalist urges Everton player to consider int'l retirement after what happened today

Ian Croll has urged Everton defender Seamus Coleman to consider quitting international duty with the Republic of Ireland.

The Liverpool Echo journalist suggested on his X account [7 September] that the defender should prioritise his club duties at this late stage of his career.

Coleman was forced off in his nation’s 2-0 defeat to England in the UEFA Nations League on Saturday [7 September], with the extent of his injury unknown.

Croll said: “Seamus Coleman really needs to set priorities at this stage of his career, and that should be Everton. Hopefully no more than a knock, but the warning signs are there already.”

Seamus Coleman faces difficult Everton choice after fresh injury blow

All football players dream of representing their country on the international stage and Coleman has lived the dream for Ireland with 72 caps for the senior side.

It is never an easy decision for a player to hang up their boots for the national team, but Coleman has surpassed the twilight years of his career and is fast entering retirement age. He will need to make sacrifices if he wants to continue playing at the highest level.

The 35-year-old has been a cause of concern at Everton for the past few seasons. He only managed 15 outings in all competitions last term and had just returned to the side in the Premier League this season in the 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth.

Everton should have signed a right-back this summer no doubt. Nathan Patterson remains on the treatment table, whereas 39-year-old Ashley Young is not a long-term option and 19-year-old Roman Dixon is far too inexperienced to be a Premier League regular at the moment.

Coleman has been a fantastic servant for the Blues; his £60,000 signing from Sligo Rovers in 2009 is the best piece of business the club has ever made and he will be remembered as one of the best to represent the Toffees.

However, he needs to accept that his career will soon end and if he wants to end his illustrious career in the English top flight then it is time to hang up the boots for Ireland.

In other Everton news, Clinton Morrison is baffled at what he saw Seamus Coleman do today.
