'If you look...' - Celtic duo take thinly-veiled digs at Rangers after what happened recently

Celtic duo Peter Lawwell and Chris McKay took a dig at Rangers in their AGM on Friday morning.

Lawwell, the club’s chairman, mentioned the gulf in finances between Champions League and Europa League sides without naming names.

McKay, who is Hoops’ chief finance officer, also chimed in and made comparisons of the different accounts.

Via the Scottish Sun, Lawwell said: “When you’re winning the league it’s fine. But we need to provide for the longer term if things don’t go quite as well as they have gone in the past.

“We can see – looking elsewhere – what happens if you don’t participate in the Champions League for a year and you replace that with the Europa League.

“That is the difficult financial challenge we have moving forward.”

McKay added: “The difference between the Champions League and the Europa League has never been more stark.

“That is evident if you look at a set of accounts with a Europa League participating team and a set of accounts with a Champions League participating team.”

Rangers need somebody to get their house in order as soon as possible

While Gers fans might find the remarks from Celtic’s Lawwell and McKay irritating, their observations on the financial disparities between Champions League and Europa League participation are factually correct.

The revenue from the Champions League significantly outstrips that of the Europa League, affecting a club’s financial stability and its ability to invest in the squad, infrastructure and other future projects.

Given Rangers’ current season performance, the gulf between the two clubs appears to be widening, not just in terms of on-pitch success but financially as well.

For Gers to remain competitive, it’s imperative for their management to address these financial and strategic issues to ensure they can challenge for top European spots again.

It’s important the club make the right appointments behind the scenes and bring in a chairman capable of restructuring things behind the scenes.

Until there is no stability in the boardroom, performances on the pitch are not expected to improve either.

In other Rangers news, two more players are not in the club’s long-term plans as an exit development has emerged from Ibrox.
