'I'm amazed' - EFL club chief ponders PSG interest in Everton takeover verdict

Darragh MacAnthony believes Everton are enough of a “sleeping giant” for the likes of Paris Saint-Germain’s owners to buy them.

Speaking on talkSPORT with Sam Matterface and Alex Crook (23 July, 10:53), the Peterborough United chairman expressed his shock that so few parties had expressed clear interest in buying the club.

PSG owners Qatar Sports Investments had explored the possibility of buying minority stake in a Premier League club in January 2023 [BBC], but there have been no developments from an Everton perspective since.

MacAnthony said: “If somebody gets that club right, they’re going to make some serious money – I’m amazed there isn’t a line of 20, 30 people trying to buy Everton.”

“PSG, I read, wanted to buy into a Premier League club, I’m amazed they haven’t even had a sniff. It’s a sleeping giant.

“A of things need to happen, but I think we’ll be having a different conversation about Everton in five years’ time.”

Everton still waiting for new owners after latest takeover collapse

MacAnthony’s comments on the bright future on Merseyside came in the wake of Dan Friedkin pulling out of his attempted takeover of the club, having looked increasingly likely to become the new owner.

Everton insider Bryan King exclusively told Goodison News on 7 July that the takeover hit a “stumbling block” due to the money that was owed to 777 Partners.

Everton’s new stadium on Bramley-Moore Dock is scheduled to open in 2025.

As such, the future looks uncertain, but the prospect of a super-rich ownership group, like that of PSG, coming on board remains a valid one, if being part of a multi-club model is to be the Toffees’ fate.

The Peterborough chief has previously said that with the move to Bramley-Moore Dock, whoever buys the Blues will be getting a bargain, even if the purchase sets them back £700million [4 June].

Should MacAnthony’s belief that the “sleeping giant” will wake comes to pass, the future may be a positive one, but with the new Premier League season fast approaching, Toffees fans will hope it’s not hampered by chaos.

In other Everton news, Sean Dyche has been backed to get a midfield transfer target ‘back to his best’.
