Andy Halliday has been blasted live on air after electing not to celebrate his goal against Rangers for Motherwell.
Former Gers man and boyhood supporter Halliday gave Motherwell a half-time lead in the Scottish League Cup semi-final at Hampden Park, to which Philippe Clement’s side responded and secured a vital 2-1 win to set up an Old Firm final with Celtic next month.
Adrian Durham and Perry Groves, live on talkSPORT [3 November, 15:31], began berating Halliday for his muted reaction to the opening goal, Durham going as far as to say he would immediately substitute him.
“If I’m Stuart Kettlewell, the Motherwell manager, I’m dragging him off, and thinking ‘you don’t care enough about this’,” Durham ranted.
“Why don’t you want to put it right up them?”, Groves agreed.
“When you look back at your career, and you think ‘oh no, I don’t want to disrespect Rangers fans’… they won’t care, they’ll be angry enough.
“I would lose it – I don’t understand having that thought process where if I score, I’m going to calm myself down. With that emotion in the game, I wouldn’t have that thought process.”
Was Andy Halliday right not to celebrate v Rangers?
This is not the first time Halliday has attracted ire for his celebrations – or lack of.
After his zealous reaction to scoring against Hibernian on 9 October, the midfielder himself admitted it was “only because it was Hibs”.
The intriguing aspect of the debate on whether or not players should celebrate against former clubs and in what circumstances is that retired players and those on the sidelines tend to criticise players for holding back.
But more often than not, when a player has enjoyed a sustained spell with a club and it has defined their career – especially when in Halliday’s case he has grown up an ardent supporter – they’re going to keep their bridges and show what they deem to be respect.
It’s easy to say from a radio studio – and it’s understandable when you’re putting the underdogs ahead against a massive club in a semi-final at the national stadium.
But ultimately, Halliday opted for the flip side of the coin – and as it turned out, it would have come back to bite him.
