Barry Ferguson revealed that “interesting” candidates from England have put their interest forward for the vacant Rangers CEO position.
The Gers have been without an established CEO since James Bisgrove “stunned” the club by departing to the Saudi Pro League [Scottish Sun] at the end of the season.
However, progress appears to be made at Rangers with Ferguson sharing with the Daily Record [11 October, pg51] the latest updates emerging from Ibrox.
He said: “I’m told there has been a lot of interest in the chief executive vacancy, with a few interesting candidates from down south keen on making the move to Glasgow.
“The board will have to do their due diligence of course and then there might be a notice period to contend with. So it might be another couple of months before Rangers are in a position to make these key appointments.”
Rangers progressing towards appointing a CEO at Ibrox
The search for a CEO at Rangers has been a long and strenuous journey thus far, the fact the position is yet to be filled two months into the new season sums up the current state of the club.
Talks with St Mirren vice-chairman Jim Gillespie collapsed in September with reports emerging he rejected the role over fear he would become the latest scapegoat at the Gers [Michael Grant].
Rangers’ search for a CEO has gone quiet since, with the finances at the club limiting who can be targeted to lead the new era at Ibrox, the dilemma has been a mess from the off.
The Gers are in desperate need of a figurehead to lead them out of the chaos that has engulfed the club all season, from the Champions League elimination in the play-off rounds, the 3-0 thrashing by Celtic in the Old Firm and the delayed construction works of the Copland Road stand it has been far from all roses in Glasgow.
John Bennett, former Gers chairman handed in his resignation after balancing his duties with acting as interim chief executive in a damning statement of how poorly managed the club is at the board level.
It is understandably impossible for Philippe Clement to focus on matters on the pitch with no clear sense of direction at the club amid a cloud of uncertainty, while the promise of a Premier League or Championship figure taking the reigns is exciting, the talk matters little until finally there is a seat in the chair.
In other Rangers news, two Gers signings have been named among the best in the Scottish Premiership already.
