John Wenham has speculated that Archie Gray could be in trouble if Tottenham sign Ajax defender Devyne Rensch.
The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose believes Ange Postecoglou’s side must ensure they don’t “stockpile too many young players.”
As reported by CaughtOffside [21 November], Liverpool and Tottenham are both interested in 21-year-old Rensch, who can play at both right-back and centre-back.
However, Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – thinks signing the Dutchman could block Gray’s progress in North London.
“We need to be signing players who are ready to contribute to the first-team straightaway,” Wenham said.
“Spurs invested heavily in young players during the summer. What would happen to Gray, who we invested £30million into, if this player was signed?
“He has been getting most of his minutes at full-back. Therefore, Gray would be at risk of not playing. Spurs need to be careful not to stockpile too many young players.
“If the scouts come back and say that Rensch is one of the best youngsters around, then absolutely go for it. However, if not, then any funds should be put toward first-team players in January.”
Tottenham to sign Ajax defender Devyne Rensch?
While Spurs might want to sign Rensch, they must ensure his arrival would make sense squad-wise.
Having spent so much money on Gray, it is clear that the North London outfit have high hopes for the 18-year-old. Therefore, they won’t want to do anything to hinder Gray’s progress, which signing Rensch might do.
There has been speculation about Gray leaving on loan in January [via GiveMeSport, 31 October], with Southampton tipped as a possible destination.
However, it doesn’t look as though the player is keen on a move away [via GiveMeSport, 11 November], and would rather stay put and try to impress Postecoglou.
As a result, signing Rensch could be an unnecessary move and a waste of money, considering Gray has been playing as a right-back, and even as a centre-back, this season.
In other Tottenham news, the club are eyeing a second Sunderland player as a Chris Rigg scouting update is shared.
