BBC reporter Kheredine Idessane was forced into a U-turn of sorts after he made a remark about empty seats at Ibrox ahead of Rangers versus FCSB.
Philippe Clement’s side took on the Romanian side in Glasgow in the Europa League on Thursday (24 October), with Idessane initially claiming on the BBC live text blog [24 October, 19:45pm] that the travelling supporters were more impressive than the home fans and that the home seats looked bare.
Idessane went on to hold his hands up, having discovered Gers fans were delayed getting into the ground and the stands had filled around the time of kick-off.
The reporter said via the blog: “In fairness to the Rangers fans, quite a few are late arrivals.
“The empty seats scattered generously around the ground have largely been filled now. Roughly the same size crowd as the Lyon match.”
Rangers fans thought to be voting with their feet
With thousands of spectators arriving right on kick-off at Ibrox, anyone could have been forgiven for believing Gers fans were showing a statement of discontent.
After the Kilmarnock defeat on 21 October and continued chaos behind the scenes, supporters have not been shy in voicing their displeasure.
It remains refreshing to see as many fans as possible inside the stadium, with an attendance of 41,981 for the 4-1 defeat by Lyon on 3 October.
Ibrox can hold in excess of 51,000, and while there remain thousands of empty seats, it is a relief to the board that a wave of fans arrived when the contest was getting underway.
The Light Blues are back in Ibrox action just three days later, against St Mirren in a crucial league fixture.
In other Rangers news, John Gilligan makes an admission to supporters regarding the stadium.
