John Wenham expects Archie Gray to get a run in the Tottenham midfield after Rodrigo Bentancur was handed a seven-match suspension.
The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose has been impressed by the progress Gray has made since joining Tottenham.
Bentancur was charged by the FA in September for suggesting South Korean team-mate Son Heung-min and his cousins “all look the same” during an interview broadcast in Uruguay last June (via the Standard, 12 September).
As a result, it was confirmed via the FA’s official website on Monday (18 November) that “An independent Regulatory Commission has imposed a seven-match suspension and £100,000 fine on Rodrigo Bentancur for a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to a media interview. “
However, Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – has backed Gray to step up in Bentancur’s absence.
“Gray is an incredibly versatile player,” Wenham said.
“With Bentancur banned, I think Gray will now get a run in the Spurs midfield. He has already played a lot of minutes for the club this season.
“He is making good progress and I think fans forget how young he is because of his high transfer fee. He’s still just 18, and I think this year is all about him just settling in at the club.”
Archie Gray to replace Rodrigo Bentancur in Tottenham midfield?
Gray is a midfielder by trade. However, since joining Spurs, he has been used mostly as a right-back, and even as a centre-back.
Therefore, he hasn’t really been able to demonstrate to his new supporters what he can do when playing in his preferred position. However, it looks as though that could be set to change.
As reported by The Telegraph (20 November), Spurs plan to appeal the length of Bentancur’s suspension, which exceeded the minimum six games applied by the FA for racist abuse, despite a potential “stumbling block” they are facing.
However, no matter the outcome of the appeal, it looks as though Bentancur will spend a considerable amount of time on the sidelines, and Gray has to make sure he steps up and takes his opportunity.
In other Tottenham news, the club are likely to block any potential loan exit for Gray.
